Key Cyber Takeaways

December 12, 2024

If you are a small to medium sized business owner

  1. Train your high risk staff (eg: Recruiters, Customer Service) on your business specific cybersecurity risks and teach them what not to do.
  2. Separate work and personal devices. Never use personal devices and personal email addresses for business purposes and vice versa.
  3. Harden your work laptops: Remove unnecessary software and browser extensions
  4. Perform all your online transactions including personal finance, banking, investments only on a hardened device.
  5. Use a 3rd party secure file sharing service to send/receive sensitive information from your customers. Eg: Candidate PII data, Credit card information etc.,
  6. Outsource all compliance related activities such as Payroll and Payment Processing
  7. Include a standard cybersecurity contract clause with your 3rd party vendors/partners to reduce your business risks.
  8. Expect the unexpected / consider cyber liability insurance.
  9. Staff posting on social media could impact your company brand image. Establish a social media policy describing what NOT to do in social media for all your staff
  10. Change vendor-provided DEFAULT passwords and disable GUEST access on all your apps.

If you shop online or through your mobile device

  1. Use Multi-Factor authentication on all critical apps (Your Personal Finance, anywhere you store credit cards online).
  2. Using your mobile digital wallets (eg: Apple Pay) for payments is far more secure than paying through stored credit cards on 3rd party websites.
  3. Avoid public WIFI when you shop online from your mobile phone
  4. Lean in on Chromebooks. Arguably, Chromebooks are more secure, have lesser attack surface and are easier to maintain than regular laptops.
  5. Download your mobile apps only from Apple App Store or Google Play Store and not anywhere else.
  6. Setup purchase alerts on your credit cards to notify you so you can detect unauthorized purchases sooner.
  7. Periodically, remove unneeded apps from your mobile devices.
  8. Review your credit card statements on a monthly basis and review your credit scores annually.

If you are a High Net Worth Investor

  1. If you don’t actively trade your Retirement Account, ask your provider if they can incorporate a lock (account freeze) on your account (You can unlock it when you need to) to minimize fraudulent activities.
  2. Always use Two Factor Authentication on all your financial transactions.
  3. Use a dedicated hardened device (on a chromebook preferably) to perform all your financial transactions on. Avoid using this device for general web browsing or email.
  4. If feasible, use a separate dedicated email account for your financial communications
  5. Turn off voice activated devices (Eg: Amazon Echo) where you work.
  6. Setup 3 kinds of alerts on your financial accounts: 1) login attempts; 2) transactions done over a certain threshold; 3) changes in account settings.
  7. Educate your family on good cyber hygiene as they can be your weakest links used as targets to pivot to your money by attackers.
  8. Make it a practice to never click on links from your emails if you don’t recognize the sender as a trusted source.
